Red Dwarf: The Beginning

I finally watched the last episode of Red Dwarf (season ten episode six: The Beginning).  As much as I loved season ten, I put off seeing this one for nearly two years now because I knew it would be the end of the series.  Eventually, everything must end, however, so I finally gave in and watched.

There is something absolutely wonderful about the way they ended this even if the episode itself was anti-climatic.  Maybe the anti-climatic feel was even the point.

Lister and his companions are stuck in space with nothing really to do anymore.  They've been fighting droids for years now and that's now become a game as opposed to a real life/death situation.  I nearly died laughing with how the boys handled the droid challenging them to a duel across time and space.  It's more of a been there, done that, getting too old to do it again response.  This is just perfect because really they can't keep the same storyline going forever but there is no storyline to move on to.  The boys (well Lister and the Cat anyway) grow old (and seemingly Rimmer's hologram makes him look older as Lister ages).  Now that they are older it doesn't make sense for them to keep fighting the same battles.  They are simply stuck in space just going through each day of life as bored old men occasionally challenging droids to ping pong tournaments.

I did love how they let the series end with Rimmer finally saving the day truly and actually.  Rimmer finally gets to be okay with his achievements  instead of dreading never becoming an officer.  It's a nice send off for the character.

So now I've finished the series.  Maybe I should revisit it again?
