SGA Rewatch: Submersion with a quick tag

Okay, I will admit that I remembered nothing of Submersion before I watched the episode again.  I was wary because any of these "horror" episodes I have a hard time seeing what is happening on the screen and I usually get bored.  They usually are fun stories if in book form, but they just don't do it for me on the screen.

So imagine my surprise when I LOVED so much of this episode.  Sure, I really didn't care for the Wraith plot, but there were so many precious moments here:

1.  Grayden!  I love this guy.  I wish they hadn't killed him because he was comedy gold.  Tactless Rodney told him he hired the wrong guy and then the other scientist following up with "He's a really good scientist.  I'm surprised Mckay didn't hire him."  I just about died laughing.  So now I need to know if we ever see Grayson in the series or if anyone has ever included him in fanfic.  I'd actually love to read a fanfic with Grayden coming to Atlantis!  Or even better, here's a tag written on the fly:

Grayson:  I thought you decided not to hire me.

SGC official: Yes, but the same position recently opened and we would like to offer it to you.

Grayson: Already?  What happened to the other guy?

SGC official: You have signed the non-disclosure agreement. You understand what we do here.

Grayson: Yes.

SGC official: Good, good.  So you are coming to work for us either at the SGC, Area 51 or Atlantis.  The position we are offering you is in Atlantis.

Grayson:  Yes, in the Pegasus Galaxy.  The other guy mentioned that much.  But you never answered my question.  What happened to the guy with my last position?

SBC Official: Pegasus is not the safest of the three assignments.

Grayson: You mean he died?

SGC Official: Yes.  He had the life sucked out of him by the Wraith.

Grayson: The Vampire like creatures that suck out your soul?

SG
C Official: Yes.

Grayson:  But he was a scientist not a soldier.  I thought Atlantis itself was safe.

SGC Official: Relatively safe compared to off-world missions, yes.  However, scientists often go off-world.  There have also been a few invasions on the city itself.

Grayson: Exactly how many scientists have died?

SGC Official: *pauses*  If you are unready to face danger, I suggest you not take the assignment.

Grayson: How many?

SGC Official: This month?  Only two.

Grayson:  Only two?  In one month you already lost two scientists?  How about in total?

SGC Official: I can't say I have the exact numbers on me, but--

Grayson: You're telling me you've been sending the best and the brightests scientists we have to another galaxy where they are regularly killed off?  Just how many brilliant scientists do you think Earth has to offer?

SGC Official: Admittedly?  Not enough.  I take it you'd like to be assigned elsewhere?

Grayson: No.  No.  I didn't say that.  Just give me a minute to think.  Crazy vampires that suck the life out of scientists or a cozy research job?  But I could travel to another galaxy and join an expedition on the cutting edge of all science?

SGC Official: Yes.

Grayson: And then die.

SG Offiial: Possibly.  You will have many Marines watching your back.  You're safety is their first concern.

Grayson: Do I get any defense training?

SGC Official: You will be trained to use some weapons and go through some basic defense maneuvers.  Once there, however, it is up to you to keep up your skills.  Each year you will have to requalify with your weapons.

Grayson: You're telling me scientists are dying regularly but you don't require them to go through daily training to keep fit and learn to defend themselves?

SGC Official: Changes in policy are currently under consideration.

Grayson:  This is crazy.  I mean, really, this whole job sounds completely insane.  Who would accept it?

SGC Official: The work is demanding.  The research is cutting edge.

Grayson: And then there's the lure of traveling to another galaxy.

SGC Official: Exactly.

Grayson: But a lot of people die?

SGC Official: Keeping this world safe while making great scientific advancements.  Yes.

Grayson: What percentage of scientists die on average a year?

SGC Official: I don't have those numbers readily available.

Grayson: I guess there's really only one choice I could make then.

SGC Official: I'll get the paperwork for Area 51.

Grayson:  No.  No.  Atlantis.  I want to go to Atlantis.

SGC Official: You're sure?

Grayons: I always wanted a big adventure.

SGC Official:  Excellent.  I will let the Daedalus know to pick you up.  We will meet again in two years for your contract renewal.

Grayson: God, I hope so.

2.  I think every post-season 3 fanfic I write must have Grayson in it now.  Also, I now have a mental image of Miko or Katie Brown or other more timid scientists having to fire their weapons at an invading enemy.

3.  I really liked where Teyla managed to come out of her trance just to realize someone is tracking her.  She turns around, aims her weapon, and there is Sheppard and Ronon aiming theirs at her and telling her to drop her weapon.  I just love scenes like this!

4.  I'm quickly forgetting whatever else I liked of this episode.  I know I should have written it all down the first time.  I remember liking how they're all annoyed at staying on the station for a few more days because there is still research to do.  How awesome to win the day but to still have work to do.  Poor Ronon, Sheppard, and Teyla.

5.  I am currently teaching exponential growth in my classes.  Thanks to this tag, I now want (but will not) to ask a question such as:

In 2005 the number of scientists on Atlantis was 200.  By the end of the year, only 125 scientists remained. Find the average percent decay rate per week for the population of scientists on Atlantis in 2005.
