Burning out is a good word for it. I think every 5 years I get a surge of writing energy but then it dissipates quickly. I burn out much easier regardless of what fandom I fall in. I think for me the fun was with the community and getting to squee with others.
I doubt I would go back and actually rewrite most of my fics. I just wish I could. With my George the turtle series there are some minor changes that could really help make the story work for a lot more people.
One of my newest stories just adds on to an d one and that seems like a good way to go back without having to revise.
