I decided to go back to my oldest fic and revise it as a writing exercise. It’s been fun and interesting so far. Apparently back then I used epithets which is just cringeworthy. I also used a lot of passive voice. I’ve been revising in several rounds with different goals each time:
(1) Replace epithets with proper nouns
(2) Replace as many instances of was/were in order to make a stronger, active voice
(3) find sentences ending in prepositions and revise
(4) consider plot elements that were overindulgent or unclear and reconsider how to present the ideas.
The fic is so much stronger now. What other elements do you look for during the revision process?
