The Things We Forget

Apparently I used to write original fiction and poetry. I don't remember doing that much, but I was searching my email for something and saw some comments on my poetry. Then I realized I'd tried to admin a group for original writing that had sholio, tipper, nottasha, and other fantastic writers in it. What really spooks me is that I barely remember this at all? Like, seriously, why is my memory so bad???

So I went back and read some of my old poems and stories and now I really want to write more original works. I have a few more memories of the community and now I wish I had the opportunity to have such a community again. I'd love a chance to have monthly prompts to write a poem or a scene, anything to just have an excuse to write something original. It feels like a small prompt a month would be a manageable way to write original work, especially if I knew I had people who might read it and it was posted in a private group.

I'm really tempted to see if I can start a similar community again.

That could be a good thing for many writers. You never know, it might even help me get back into writing - though I do seem to be going through a very long drought period atm *sigh*.

I think writing 500 words a month to a prompt can be a great way to break a dry spell. I’d totally make this community if you are interested. I’m checking with some others as well.

If it was no pressure to produce anything or to read things others have written if it's really not your thing (for me, if someone wrote horror or romance come immediately to mind), so you can read what you want and write when you feel able, then yes, this might be a good thing to try out.

My problem is that I'm very much not into romantic relationships (whether M/F, F/F, M/M or any other combination), and that can be a problem in certain groups, as people make assumptions that aren't true. Especially if I make an exception (possibly an author I particularly like, or the romance is very low key), and then get panned for not reading everything in that genre. So I say yes, but it would depend on the people in the group I guess. I've been burned before, so it makes me cautious now.

I think that is definitely a good rule to have. I think it’s very true that we don't all like the same things and shouldn't be expected to read what we don’t like. Back in the day, I really didn’t want to read any relationships. I was much closer to ace then (and there’s a lot of good ace fics these days which is nice). We’d need specific tagging to make sure people knew what they were in for. I also think participation has to be optional. Nothing like a requirement to make me not want to do it!

I had forgotten about that entirely! Actually, I have only the vaguest recollection of it now that you mention it either.

Right? 20 years!!! How? It looks like we did original writing in that community for a while.

Tipper and Nottasha are actually back writing sga so it’s so interesting looking back at all this.

It sounds like Tipper is up for an original writing community so I’m going to try restarting one. See what I can crank out. My fanfic these days is miles better than it used to be (and I have more readers, too, despite how old sga is) so it seems like a good time to try more original works.

I love that you do so much writing still! Both original and fanfic. You really kept it going :)
